Columbus, Ohio--Herbert Bresler will discuss the challenges of translating cell- and tissue-based therapies into successful products as part of the 2006 Regenerate World Congress on Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine in Pittsburgh this week.
According to Dr. Bresler, the move from laboratory to market cannot occur without thoughtful development of manufacturing capabilities.
"A greater awareness is needed in the research and development community of the 'cliff' that awaits successful lab-based processes when faced with the challenges of simultaneously attaining commercial scale and regulatory rigor," Dr. Bresler says.
Dr. Bresler's presentation will kick off the Thursday sessions and set the stage for the final day of the Regenerate World Congress, and the first day of the 2006 Society for Biomaterials Annual Meeting and Exposition, which will be held at the same location.

On the issue of the region's best opportunities for growth, one panelist, Herb Bresler of Battelle Healthcare Products in Columbus, said that OU provides not only technical expertise in the area of biotechnology, but also experience and strong understanding of how to turn biotech discoveries into marketable products and companies.
"We came to Athens to participate with the university (in a joint venture), because we knew that the university is an incubator of innovation," especially in biotech, Bresler said. He said OU personnel have "a deep understanding of what's required" to bring a new drug to market, including protection of intellectual property rights and clearing of regulatory hurdles.
To a question of how best to bring high-paying jobs to the region, a participant from OU's Lancaster campus, taking part via teleconferencing, noted that her company has advanced through ongoing investment in advanced technology. State funding to help existing Ohio businesses make such upgrades would be a big help, she suggested.

Bresler of Battelle agreed, but noted that the focus should be not only on technology, but on the broader category of skills, including business management skills to shepherd start-up firms to success.
"We need the right people in charge of those companies," he said. "We need to attract people who are experienced, who have done this kind of development."
When Taft asked if developing such managers locally is a realistic goal, Bresler suggested it isn't. -
