   Life was good for George F. Bresler until June 2000.
   
   A veteran commercial bill collector, he was the senior collector at Leib & Co. of Mount Laurel, a fast-growing company that collected debts businesses owed other businesses.
   
   "Then Bob (Leib) called us in one nice day to say he had great news: the company was being acquired by Creditek of Parsippany. We kept waiting for the great news," Bresler said.
   
   To make a long story short, the acquisition didn't work out. Leib was dissatisfied and retired after four months. Bresler was promoted to vice president and told to lay off half the 45-person work force. Business plummeted for the company, which in 1999 had had revenues of $2.3 million and $40 million of debt under placement for collection.
   
   Bresler had survived. The money was good; he was near the top. But he wasn't happy."I saw Creditek going in a direction I was unwilling to travel," he said.
   
   So in April 2001 he started his own company, GB Collects. GB Collects began in a small office in Southampton as a retail agency, collecting debts owed by individuals, so as not to compete with Creditek.
   
   "I stuck it out from April to October of 2001 working both jobs," Bresler says.

   It was a hectic time for Bresler, now 37.
   
   "I've been in the credit collection field since 1987, but this is my first venture owning my own business," he says. "With a child on the way, I took the ultimate risk of resigning my very comfortable job payroll-wise, putting my life savings on the line and starting GB Collects.
   
   "We moved into our current offices (Commerce Lane in West Berlin) at the beginning of 2002 and business has exploded. But in the last year, we have had a baby and moved twice while growing the business, and there hasn't been a moment to spare."
   
   After a stint in temporary housing, Bresler and his wife, Nicole, now are living in Medford with their two sons, George, 3, and Carson, 1. And the business is growing rapidly.
   
   "We have 30 employees, about half former employees of Leib or Creditek," says Bresler, recently named one of NJ BIZ's "Top 40 under 40."
   
   "We are now managing more than $40 million in outstanding receivables and are expecting about $2.2 million in revenues this year. We had a 496 percent growth rate last year, and we are expanding from 8,000 to 12,000 square feet."
   
   Meanwhile, Creditek's backtracked.
