Luckily, that attorney, Matthew Bresette of the Hyannis firm Nutter McClennen & Fish, realized that a medallion left unsold and unwanted at a Boston estate sale might just be of importance to the town whose seal it bears.

That hunch proved correct.The medallion, which Bresette returned to the town, was struck in 1939 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of Yarmouth's incorporation.

In a letter of thanks to Bresette, Lawton said the medallion would be displayed at Town Hall and might be used as a model for the town's 375th anniversary in 2014.
