Bob Brenzing of the American Heart Association in Grand Rapids said adults should eat no more than 6 ounces of meat a day. He suggests swapping red meat with skinless poultry or baked, broiled or grilled fish twice a week because the meats are lower in fat and cholesterol.

"Meatout sounds like a great idea. ... Anyone can go without a hamburger, just for a day," he said. "A lot of vegetarians are living very healthy lives. ... it can be done."

Brenzing said plant proteins alone can provide enough of the essential and non-essential amino acids, as long as sources of dietary protein are varied and caloric intake is high enough to meet energy needs. Whole grains, legumes, vegetables, seeds and nuts all contain both essential and non-essential amino acids, he said.

Forty governors and large city mayors are issuing Meatout proclamations.

The proposal is also supported by Bob Brenzing with the American Heart Association.

Brenzing says he's in favor of any measure to crack down on smoking.

"All in all, you're looking at an unhealthy life and an earlier chance of dying," he said.
