Major media outlets descended on the Venice Little Theatre in March after Jason Brenner, a part-time music teacher at Lemon Bay High School, lost his job because he was performing in "The Full Monty."

More specifically, administrators were concerned that he was stripping (down to a G-string) at the end of the musical about factory workers who take desperate measures to support their families.

No administrators saw the production before announcing the decision.Brenner was offered a chance to keep his job if he stopped doing the show or stopped performing in the finale strip routine. He decided to stay with the show, even though he did not get paid for the performances.

The teacher said he had planned to leave at the end of the school year, anyway.

He is still performing, working as a musical director and providing voice lessons to students.

Jason Brenner, who is in his third year as a part-time music teacher at the high school, said Lemon Bay administrators gave him a letter Thursday that offered him three options: "stop doing the show; continue the show but take yourself out of the last scene so that you're not naked on stage, or continue doing the show at full capacity but hand in a letter of resignation."

Brenner went on with the show Thursday night and plans to continue with the amateur theater production through its closing performance March 18.He doesn't get paid for the show, which has been running for more than two weeks.
    ...
In the musical, based on the British film hit, Brenner plays Dave Bukatinsky, one of several out-of-work steelworkers in Buffalo, N.Y., who strips for a night to raise money to help support their families.
    ...
Riley said district officials learned Brenner was in the show from a picture in the newspaper.
    ...
Brenner said he was placed on temporary leave of absence until late next week, when he is expected to submit his resignation.

He said he told Assistant Principal Mike Louden he "would probably be resigning.I am not going to stop myself from doing something I love to do, and I have a career path that I want to take, and it's definitely not teaching high school."

Brenner said he wants to pursue work as a musical director, vocal coach and performer. He will continue to serve as musical director of Lemon Bay's production of the musical "Cats," which opens Thursday.

"The Full Monty" has proved to be the most successful show in the history of Venice Little Theatre. On Thursday, it topped the all-time sales totals, and it is expected to surpass attendance records before it closes.

"I'm disappointed for Jason and in the school's position," Chase said.
