Judge Clayton Brenner, 97, of Bickford Cottage, Marshalltown, IA, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002. Clayton was born Dec. 28, 1904, in Stilwell, Johnson County, KS. He graduated from high school in Stilwell, then enrolled at Kansas University, where he received his law degree in 1928. While at KU, he met and married Cecile Goforth. After receiving his law degree, Clayton opened a private law practice in Olathe. In Olathe, he also served nine years as Johnson County Attorney, a year as judge of the Magistrate Court and nearly 18 years as a Johnson County District Judge. Clayton took an active part in community affairs, serving on the official board of the Methodist Church, as president of the Olathe School Board and president of the Rotary Club 1962 to 1963. In 1993, the Rotary Club honored him as a Paul Harris Fellow. In 1998, he established the Judge Clayton and Cecile Goforth Brenner Scholarship in Law at the University of Kansas. Clayton received the prestigious Justinian Award from the Kansas Bar Association in 1983. In 2001, the University of Kansas School of Law awarded him the James Wood Green Medallion in recognition of those the law school holds in high esteem. During his retirement years, Clayton and Cecile traveled extensively. -
