While many make saddles part time or as a hobby, there are only about 200 full-time custom saddle makers in the country, said Bob Brenner, executive director of the American Saddle Makers Association, a trade organization.Rising fuel prices have driven up costs, while competition from part-time saddle makers who have other sources of income has kept saddle prices down, he said.

"It's a tough living," said Brenner, a custom saddle maker based in Black Forest, Colo, "but if you do it right, it can be done."
