Ellen Brenner-Boutillier, owner of the Fleet Feet Foot Shop, says the first thing you need to do is look at a person's foot arch.

"It tells me what kind of stability they need in a shoe.We look at the foot very carefully. That determines how much arch support might be necessary. Then we bring them over to the treadmill to validate what we saw," said Ellen.

According to Ellen, technology plays a critical role in selecting appropriate footwear. One of the tools used today to find out the right footwear is the video foot strike analysis.

"Once we've figured out, looking at your foot, what shoe might be appropriate, we then put you on the treadmill. We videotape you on the treadmill in motion, then we play back what we saw, in order to determine that you are stable in that shoe," said Ellen.

So, what happens during the testing process? If you look and find out that the shoe is completely wrong and you have to start out from scratch?Well, Ellen says that could happen.

"What we see sometimes when you're bare-foot, doesn't necessarily mean that the shoe is actually right. The video foot strike analysis is what helps determine and validate it," she said.
