Professor Peter Brennan has been a consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust since 2002. He is also honorary Professor of Surgery and Head of the Academic Department of Surgery, at the University of Portsmouth. He qualified with honours in both medicine (1994) and dentistry (1987) gaining distinctions and winning many prizes in subjects including anatomy, pharmacology, anaesthetics, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology and ophthalmology. He was awarded the gold medal for outstanding performance in the intercollegiate exit FRCS examination in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Peter Brennan's main clinical interests are head and neck malignancy, reconstructive free flap surgery and neck lumps. In a research capacity, he has ongoing projects in both basic science and clinical research. The basic science research is two-fold: the role of nitric oxide in oral cancer biology and adhesion molecules in cancer. He is a research supervisor, an examiner for higher research degrees and has published over 70 papers to date covering many aspects of oral and maxillofacial surgery, not exclusively cancer. He has recently had a paper published in Cancer Research, in collaboration with Professor Salvador Moncada's laboratory at the Wolfson Institute, London.
Peter Brennan's research has been awarded both National and International research prizes, and he has lectured extensively in the UK and abroad. He is an assessor for several grant awarding bodies. He is committed to teaching and education, and has recently been appointed to the Court of Examiners at the Royal College of Surgeons of England for the MRCS examination. He reviews for many general and specialist journals and is the Deputy Editor of the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Portsmouth Hospital's Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeon, Peter Brennan, has been elected to the prestigious position of "Hunterian Professor", won against competition from surgeons across the country and given in recognition of outstanding research work carried out in the surgeon's field.

Professor Brennan has also recently been made an Honorary Professor in Head and Neck Surgery by the University of Portsmouth.
Professor Brennan has also won several national and international research scholarships and prizes, given invited lectures worldwide and last year was awarded £10,000 by the Royal College of Surgeons, for his research into the causes and treatment of mouth cancer. He has published over 50 research papers and is on the editorial board for several surgical journals.
Professor Brennan said that the Maxillofacial department, which sees over 5000 patients a year, is one of the busiest units in the country and is gaining a national and international reputation.

Professor Brennan qualified as a dental surgeon in 1986. He then went on to study medicine, qualifying in 1994. He subsequently worked at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge for the world famous liver surgeon, Professor Sir Roy Calne. He completed his MD thesis - Higher Research Degree in 2000. From 1996 - 2002 Professor Brennan was on the South Coast Training Programme in Maxillofacial and has been a consultant since 2002. -
