Paula Brennan, Group Fitness Coordinator at the Wellness Center, said fun animal poses can help the parents as much as the kids to get over shyness about yoga.
"Getting on your hands and knees can be intimidating in front of other adults and children," she said. "I think it's as beneficial for the parents as it is for the kids."
Brennan said the class has grown more and more popular over the past year.
"It started off with about three to five people, and it's grown to a point where now we'll sometimes get 13 to 15 kids," Brennan noted. "It's one of those things that we don't really market, because you can only handle so many kids."
Despite the "Daddy and Me" moniker, Brennan noted that all parents encouraged to participate.
"A lot of fitness centers will offer 'Mommy and Me' yoga," she said.

Brennan warned against the presumption that the Wellness Center class was all about the kids, however, stressing that the interaction between kids and parents was fundamental to the goals.
"Really, it's a fun time for parents to interact with their kids in some activity other than just putting your kid in the pool for swim lessons while the parent sits on the deck and watches," she said.

Brennan said that child development experts are beginning to investigate the positive impact yoga is having on children with hyperactivity and attention deficit issues.
"Yoga also helps with discipline," Brennan said.

Finally, however, Brennan said that she hoped the "Daddy and Me" yoga class as the Wellness Center at Meadowmont left participants with a simple message.
"These kids are learning to stretch and do all of those things," she said, "but they're also simply doing something active with their parents.
