    Hon. Lawrence J. Brennan, a resident of Garden City, has been appointed Acting Justice of the New York State Supreme Court.

    Prior to his appointment by Supreme Court Justice Anthony Marano, Administrative Judge of the Nassau County Courts, he had served as a judge of the Nassau Family Court since 1997.

    Justice Brennan has been an adjunct professor of law at both the St. John's University School of Law and at the Jacob D. Fuchsberg Touro Law Center since 1992.He has also been a special professor of law at Hofstra Law School since 1993.

    Prior to his judicial career, he had been the chief deputy county attorney for litigation and appeals at the Nassau County Attorney's Office, where he supervised fifty-six attorneys in eight bureaus.Previously, he had been a trial lawyer in private practice for more than ten years.Before commencing his legal career, he had been a special education teacher with the Nassau County Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES).

    He is a graduate of the St. John's University School of Law.In addition, he received an M.S. in Special Education from Hofstra University and a B.S. in English from St. Joseph's College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

    Long active in community affairs, he has served as a director and treasurer of the Central Property Owners' Association, past president of the board of directors of the Epilepsy Foundation of Long Island, Inc. and a founding board member of the Nassau County Sports Commission.He has also coached boys and girls basketball, soccer, softball and baseball for the Garden City Centennials, the Garden City Athletic Association and the St. Joseph's CYO program.

    Justice Brennan and his wife, Suzanne, have resided in Garden City for the past twenty eight years.

    Prior to judicial service, he was the chief deputy county attorney for litigation and appeals with the Nassau County Attorney's Office, the largest suburban municipal law office in the United States.He supervised 55 attorneys in 8 bureaus who were responsible to defend more than 4,000 pending lawsuits and appeals in state and federal courts.Between 1993 and 1996 , he argued 32 state and federal appeals.In addition, he established an affirmative subrogation unit, administered Nassau County's alternative dispute resolution program, and co-chaired its "Americans With Disabilities Act" compliance committee.

    While in private practice from 1979 to 1988 , Judge Brennan represented defendants, insurers, and plaintiffs in state and federal courts as a civil trial lawyer.Before practicing law, he was a special education teacher with the Nassau County Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES).

    He is admitted to practice law in New York and in federal courts, including the United States Supreme Court, the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Second Circuit, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, and the United States District Courts for the Eastern District and the Southern District of New York.

    Since 1993 , Judge Brennan has been adjunct professor of law at the St. John's University School of Law and at the Jacob D. Fuchsberg Touro Law Center, as well as special professor of law at Hofstra University School of Law.He has taught numerous courses, including insurance law, remedies, expert witnesses, trial practice, pre-trial litigation, and family law.He has lectured on many legal topics and chaired or been a panel member for more than 70 seminars sponsored by prestigious legal and insurance associations, law schools, and universities.

    Judge Brennan is a graduate of St. John's University School of Law.He was awarded his M.S. in Special Education from Hofstra University's Graduate School of Education, at which he also completed his post-master's certifications in education administration and supervision.He received his B.S. in English from St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
