JACK BRENNAN, John's father, is the author of "THE SEA ANGLER'S REFERENCE BOOK, INCORPORATING THE "FOLLY" ANGLER'S GUIDE TO BETTER FISHING : a lighthearted inventory of sins and syndromes, committed by 'folly' anglers on North Sea charter boats."
    ...
Many of you will already know Jack Brennan, former skipper of the 'Mermaid' charter boat.Until his retirement in 2003, most of Jack's interesting and varied career was related to the sea.He started out in the Royal Navy; spent a number of years as a commercial fisherman; worked for twenty years - mostly abroad - as a consultant on fisheries projects with the United Nations and other International Aid agencies; had a hire charter boat business in British Columbia; returned to commercial fishing in the U.K.; worked with his son, John, on John's charter boats, gathering a wealth of material for his book in the process; then owned and operated his own charter boat out of Whitby - the 'Mermaid'.After he sold the 'Mermaid' in 2003, Jack spent several years teaching part-time at the local Fishing Industry Training School.

ABOUT THE SKIPPER - [Cached Version]

THE MAN HIS ANGLERS DUBBED 'THE CODFATHER' - JOHN BRENNAN, SKIPPER, CHIEFTAIN
    ...
John Brennan, skipper of the 'Chieftain', is Whitby's best charter skipper.

‘What makes John Brennan the best skipper?' you might ask.

Firstly, he has more sea-time and experience than any other Whitby charter boat skipper.John left school in 1968 and since then has worked exclusively as a commercial fisherman and charter boat skipper. He is the longest-serving charter boat skipper in Whitby.

JOHN'S GREAT-GREAT-GRANDDADDY, TAKING HOME SUPPER! HMMMM ... THERE'S SOMETHING FISHY ABOUT THIS PHOTO ... Unlike most other charter boat skippers in the region, John is, and always has been, a full-time seaman. He comes from many generations of seamen and commercial fishermen, and has devoted his life to being on the sea as a safe and very successful skipper. This is likely to extend a measure of assurance to anglers whenever leaving Whitby harbour.

Secondly, each year for the last decade, John has caught more and bigger cod on his boats than have been caught on any other charter boat in Whitby. When he was the owner/operator of the 55-foot charter boat "Achates" his anglers caught more big cod than any other skipper during the same period. Now with a much larger and superior vessel, the 'Chieftain', he continues his tradition of annually catching more and bigger cod than all the other local skippers.

Thirdly, John Brennan has far more days at sea per season than any other charter boat skipper.Because of the size of the 'Chieftain' he has regularly been able to offer a comfortable and productive day's fishing when other boats have cancelled their trips or returned to harbour prematurely for want of good weather. He sets away for his trips on time, and does not return to harbour early with feeble excuses for doing so.In his experience, if a day starts slowly it needs to be given a chance to finish well.

Fourthly, John's customers invariably endorse his reputation as the best and safest skipper operating on the east coast. They recognise and appreciate his continuous efforts to provide them with the most productive and successful fishing trips possible. His well-satisfied customers continue to return time and again to enjoy fishing with him.
