James Brennan
Catholic University Professor
James Brennan, 74, a professor emeritus of physics at Catholic University who served 43 years on the faculty there, died of cardiac arrest Jan. 24 at his winter home in Tucson.He also lived in Silver Spring.
Dr. Brennan had served twice as head of Catholic's Physics Department and had been associate dean of arts and sciences for graduate studies.He was a former president of the Catholic University chapter of the American Association of University Professors, president of the Academic Senate and faculty representative to the Board of Trustees.He retired in 1995.
He was born in Hazleton, Pa., and served in the Merchant Marine during World War II.After the war, he graduated from the University of Scranton and received a doctorate in physics from the University of Wisconsin.
In 1952, he joined the physics faculty at Catholic University.Professionally, he specialized in theoretical nuclear physics.He also was a consultant to the Naval Ordnance Laboratory, where he was acting chief of the Theoretical Nuclear Physics Branch.
He was a fellow of the American Physical Society, a member of Sigma Xi, the Washington Philosophical Society and the Cosmos Club.
He was an outdoorsman and cyclist and read history, philosophy and theology as avocations.
A 15-year survivor of heart surgery, he had been a counselor to other patients.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Anne, of Tucson and Silver Spring; five children, Kate Brennan of Radford, Va., Thomas, of Annapolis, Sean, of Santa Rosa, Calif., James, of New York, and Tad, of New Haven, Conn.; a sister; and eight grandchildren.
