More depression on a disk from Ian Brennan, who makes his living as a mental health specialist in a psychiatric ER, and obviously uses his job as an inspiration for most of the songs he writes. My first exposure to Brennan was with his last release - " Paperboy" - which conveyed the same, dire subject material.I was hoping it was a style that came through that one time, and we'd see a little more upbeat lyrical work on the next one.Apparently not so, as this one is more of the stark day to day realism one might expect to find in his line of work, but one that, given a choice, most people would rather not face willingly.A quick look through the lyrics here finds drug using prostitutes, teenage crime, insanity, stillbirth, and commercialism.Brennan's guitar work is admirable, with a raw wall of sound approach, and lyrics, that, despite their depressive nature, make for an interesting read.Brennan is a solid songwriter, and I'll make a similiar comment as I did with "Paperboy" - with a more listener friendly approach to the lyrics, he might be able to give up that day job after all.

Twenty-seven year old Ian Brennan has a story to tell, and on "Paperboy", his sixth self-produced and marketed collection, he delivers ten separate chapters.Imagine the nightly news, but instead of the little corner inset for the hearing impaired, there's a guy playing along with his electric guitar.Brennan is first and foremost a story teller, with subject matter that may be too intense for commercial success, but he proves throughout the disc that he is no stranger to the guitar. With lyrics reminiscent of a street smarter Bruce Springsteen and vocals with a Lou Reed roughness, Brennan delivers a powerful disc of electric and acoustic powered rock that, like it or not, will have you thinking about the songs while you sing along.
