   Gavin Walker spoke to the regions Senior Tourism Officer, Damien Brennan about the positive marketing strategy already in place.

   Thanks to the help of the funding bodies local hoteliers have been allowed to invest in their properties and as a result we have - by percentage - the largest number of resort hotels in Ireland with 22 properties full leisure facilities, said Damien Brennan, Senior Tourism Officer for the Northwest Tourism Region.
   
   The impact has been incredible, and the hotels are enjoying a real boom. And Damien knows of what he speaks.
   
   In 1974 he was the Assistant Manager at the Sligo Park Hotel which had 60 rooms in two blocks. In winter one block of 30 rooms was closed completely and a further 15 were closed most weekends. But today it ha a full l ; leisure centre, 104 rooms and it be harder to get a room at the weekend than during the week.

   However, Damien is positive about the future. We have the product that would allow us to meet these targets which would take us from the bottom of the league to the middle above Midlands East or South East. But to achieve that requires two specific things : a continuation of marketing funds being made available to us allowing us to continue sharpening what we have begun o establish. And a resolution to the problems in the North.
   
   In fact, it be all predicated on peace in the North. that be what has held us back to this point and a resolution of those problems would create a flow of tourists into this Region beyond our wildest dreams..
