There are many good reasons to sell Alaska, according to Bob Brennan, president of Glacier Bay Cruiseline, who encourages home based agents to get on the Alaska selling bandwagon.

In fact, Brennan noted that the Alaska market shares something in common with home based agents: both are growing by leaps and bounds.

"Alaska is an increasingly big market and is probably growing faster than any other," said Brennan. Similarly, home based agents are the fastest growing segment of the distribution system , something Brennan sees as a "very good" trend.

Moreover, since Alaska per diems are higher than most other destinations , "certainly more than the Caribbean," according to Brennan , commissions are higher, he noted.

Brennan said that Alaska comes in close behind the Caribbean as the most popular vacation destination.

According to him, the beauty of selling Alaska is its universal appeal. His company specializes in a particular niche: adventure travel aboard small ships for 45- to 65-year olds. Adventurous possibilities include kayaks that are boarded on the vessels from a floating launch platform, then gently pushed into the water by the crew.

He added that adventures are available in three levels (high, medium and low) and are tailored to the interests, abilities and preferred activities of the passengers. Even folks in their 80s have told Brennan it's "the best adventure they've ever had."

"Alaska used to be considered the last place to visit and, therefore, was largely a destination for older people. Today, people visiting the state are younger. They may first come on a large cruise ship and then choose to return later and try a different type of experience," he said.

Brennan enthusiastically pointed out some of the attributes the state offers.

"Once we experienced the product for ourselves, we were hooked," Brennan said.
