Brian Brennan, a former Newton star, will take over a Sparta High School team that has won a record nine SCIL titles and nine SCIL Tournaments. He will make the transition from freshmen to varsity coach, replacing four-year head coach Al Blanchard. "I've always felt we've had the talent to win," said Brennan, a four-year player at Fairleigh Dickinson University-Madison.

"Obviously, I want to improve," said Brennan, a former assistant at FDU and Watchung Hills High School.

"It's awesome," said Brennan. "We're all extremely competitive and we push our players to that level. It also gives me a bunch of people to talk to when I need advice." The Spartans return senior point guard Jarret Seitz, who saw time in the starting lineup last year and who Brennan has already dubbed as the "team leader."

Still, the Spartans graduated most of their starting lineup and Brennan is left with the tough task of molding together a new group of players. Unfortunately, there is little room for rebuilding in Sparta, where it is used to winning. "I do feel a little extra pressure," said Brennan. "I expect more." During his high school days at Newton, the Spartans were the Braves' archrival. He will be going up against a lot of the coaches he went up against as a player. "It's fantastic," said Brennan. "I love being in the SCIL." Brennan has a head start on next year by coaching a summer league team in Hopatcong. The team is broken into two squads so Brennan has a good look at every player before Sparta's season starts in November "It's going great," said Brennan. "A lot of guys are getting the chance to play and I get to see what they're capable of." Brennan, who just got back from his honeymoon, will continue to teach history at Sparta.
