Brian Breneman, the hospital's director of marketing and community relations, said that in 2002 A. L. Lee Memorial was the annual Healthcare Innovation Award Winner for the Home Blood Draw Program for home bound-patients.In its unanimous vote, Iroquois Healthcare Alliance, the trade association for 58 New York state hospitals and health systems, referred to this program's benefit to the community; its vision and innovation; its enhancing effectiveness of healthcare services; and potential applicability to other healthcare providers.

Breneman said that 2002 also saw the acquisition and successful implementation of a $1.4 million Meditech Information System in the hospital. It is "one of the premier integrated hospital information systems in the industry," enabling doctors and nurses to access clinical information, medications, and patient history within seconds.Part of the project involved the creation of a multimedia education center for computer training and medical research to provide thousands of hours of training needed for hospital using the new system.

Another success was the implementation of the patient centered care project in October. This program was implemented to coordinate all patient care service through the bed side nurse, thus eliminating the traditional med distribution nurse.According to Breneman, this project resulted in more efficient service and more time for nurses at the bedside. He added that the "new nursing paradigm was supported by the installation of the advanced Omnicell computerized medication distribution system."

Breneman said that A. L. Lee Memorial Hospital had three goals for 2003.A new telecommunication system which will enhance telephone access both for patients, departments, external providers, and families will be installed this year.

A second goal is to play a key role in the new nursing RN degree program offered at Cayuga Community College Fulton Campus.According to Breneman, A. L. Lee will provide clinical training and experience on-site, thus eliminating the need for nursing students to leave the county to become RNs.
