But when a handful of Ellensburg cineophiles, including Joel Brenden, then a Central Washington University art student, and Terri Petrey, a middle-age mom who knows how to handle a spreadsheet, met at a showing of film shorts on campus, it was the unofficial start of something bigger.
...
"We got enough of a crowd, that we decided we could do a full-on film festival," says Brenden, 25, who graduated with his bachelor's degree last year.
Beginning today and running through Sunday, the Ellensburg Film Festival will show more than 50 films , documentary, independent, animated shorts, American classics , on five screens around town. There'll be panel discussions, workshops and even some famous movie cars on display.
Organized in less than a year , Brenden became the programing director and Petrey the festival president , and operated under the umbrella of Ellensburg's Laughing Horse Arts Foundation, which supports such endeavors as Jazz in the Valley and the Spirit of the West Cowboy Poetry Gathering, the inaugural event is the reel deal.
...
The festival's intent, say Brenden and Popovic, was to book films for everyone.
...
Of course, the festival will attract "film people," says Brenden.
"But everybody likes watching movies," he adds, countering the image of the film-festival snob.
