    Stephen Brenchley

A DEPUTY headteacher who had a secret three-year affair with a teenage girl in Norfolk has also admitted sexually assaulting a 15-year-old Suffolk schoolgirl more than 20 years ago.

Married father-of-three Stephen Brenchley, 57, was suspended from his position as deputy head at Costessey High School, near Norwich, last December last when details of his misconduct were being investigated.

Brenchley taught at Ipswich's Copleston High School and Mildenhall Upper School before moving to Norfolk.

His affair with the teenage girl came to light when he sent her a letter asking her not to co-operate with police which was discovered by the girl's father, Norwich Crown Court heard yesterday.

Brenchley, of Water Lane, West Runton, admitted three charges of having sex with the girl while in a position of trust, another charge of having underage sex with the girl and another of abuse of trust by sexually touching the girl.

He also admitted indecently assaulting a 15-year-old girl in Suffolk in the 1980s.

He denied a further sex charge and a charge of perverting the course of justice by sending the Norfolk girl a letter telling her not to talk to police about evidence, including a bra and thong set and text messages.

Shelagh Davies, mitigating, said: "There was an ongoing relationship with the girl from the age of about 14 through until she was 17 or thereabouts."

The case was adjourned for pre-sentence and psychiatric reports until July 7.

Brenchley had been at Costessey High School since 2001 and previously taught at Flegg High School, at Martham, near Yarmouth. He spent 15 years teaching at schools in Suffolk.

A spokesman for Suffolk County Council confirmed Brenchley worked at Copleston High School, in Ipswich, from September 1, 1990 to August 31, 1997.

Prior to this, he worked at Mildenhall Upper School.

Brenchley lives with his wife Debbie, to whom he has been married for 26 years. She teaches at Cromer High School where she is head of languages.

Parents whose children attend the school said after the hearing how they hoped that this would mean that Brenchley would never again be able to teach their children.

Disgraced deputy headteacher Stephen Brenchley has been jailed for five years and three months for sex offences against two of his former pupils.

The former Costessey High School deputy was sentenced at Norwich Crown Court yesterday after admitting five offences against two under-age girls, taking place more than 20 years apart.

However, Brenchley, 48, may be out of prison in little more than two years, having already served 159 days of his sentence.

Today, police said they believed Brenchley may have abused more young girls and urged any of his victims to come forward.

During yesterday's hearing new details emerged of the lengths to which Brenchley would go to cover up his abuse. These included making his victims, whose identities are protected, hide under blankets in his car or in the boot as he drove them to remote locations for sex.
    ...
While Brenchley was working at Costessey High School, he struck up a three-year affair with another pupil, which started when she was 14.The court heard how the girl had made him feel "lovesick" and the relationship had only ended when she finished it.

The most recent abuse came to light when Brenchley confided in a friend, who contacted the police. However, upon investigation he pleaded with his victim not to talk to the police, leading to a perverting the course of justice charge, which was later discontinued.

His first victim came forward earlier this year after reading about the case in the newspapers.

Katharine Moore, prosecuting, said Brenchley was "a dangerous and corrupting influence on young females".
    ...
Brenchley, of Water Lane, West Runton, admitted two charges of engaging in sexual activity while in a position of trust between June 15, 2002, and June 15, 2004, two charges of sexual activity with a child between April 30, 2004 and June 15, 2005 and a charge of indecent assault May 28, 1984, and May 28, 1986.

Earlier charges of indecently assaulting the Costessey pupil and perverting the course of justice were not proceeded with.

Brenchley, who had worked at Mildenhall Upper School, Copleston High School and Flegg High School, Martham, taught at Costessey for five years from 2001.He was sacked as soon as he admitted the charges.

Brenchley was also banned from living at or sleeping at residential premises where girls under the age of 18 are living, sleeping or visiting, organising or participating in events in which girls under 18 are participants and must not do any work, paid or unpaid, that brings him in contact with girls under the age of 18.He must also stay on the sex offenders' register for life.

Today it was unclear where his wife of more than 25 years, Deborah, and their three children were.

Stephen Brenchley, 48, of Water Lane, West Runton, has been sentenced at Norwich Crown Court to five years three months in prison after admitting committing five sexual offences against under age girls.

After initially making no comment to police, Brenchley, who was a teacher at Costessey High School near Norwich, admitted the offences in May this year.
    ...
An additional charge was put to Brenchley for the first time in May in relation to a second female victim.
    ...
Police first arrested Brenchley in December last year after another teacher at Costessey High School raised the alarm.Brenchley had confided in the colleague that a four-year relationship he had been having with the victim had come to an end.The colleague was troubled by the revelation and sought advice before approaching Norfolk County Council Social Services, who then informed police.

As soon as the allegation came to light Brenchley was immediately suspended from work and two specialist officers from Norfolk Constabulary's Child Protection Unit visited Costessey High School and spoke to the victim. After further enquiries with teachers and other members of staff, Brenchley was arrested and taken to Bethel Street Police Station in Norwich.

Officer in the case, Detective Constable Sarah Collins said: "We conducted a very thorough investigation into what were very serious allegations.

"And despite Brenchley's continued reluctance to cooperate with police, we were able to secure significant evidence which led to charges being made."

Brenchley had taken a special interest in the victim's schooling and he used this to groom her into having a sexual relationship with him.

After media reports of Brenchley's court appearances in Norwich, a second woman contacted police to report that she too had been a victim of sexual offences whilst still at school more than 20 years ago when Brenchley was at the very beginning of his career.

"Stephen Brenchley has lost his liberty, his good reputation and his career as a result of his actions.

    Stephen Brenchley: the background
    ...
Stephen Brenchley, 48, came to Norwich in 2001 to take up his post as deputy head of Costessey High School with a proven professional pedigree, having more than 20 years' experience in secondary school education.

Brenchley, who was previously deputy head teacher of Flegg High School, Martham, was also a respected figure in the tight-knit community of West Runton where he had been living with his wife Deborah and three children.

But today that reputation and treasured home life is in tatters after he pleaded guilty to having sex with a teenage pupil and indecently assaulting another teenager 20 years ago.

The shockwaves are still reverberating around the small coastal village, where Brenchley married Debbie 25 years ago, with few able to believe Brenchley was capable of such crimes.

"He was a pleasant enough fellow," said a 76-year-old man who lives on Water Lane, West Runton, where Brenchley moved to with his family about 10 years ago.
    ...
One neighbour, who used to teach Brenchley's three children Jonathan, Michael and Joanna at Sheringham Primary School, said: "They were quite a normal family with three children.
    ...
After growing up on the Isle of Wight, Stephen Brenchley, a former pupil of the Sandown Grammar School, went to Sheffield University in 1976 where he studied geography.

After spells teaching at Mildenhall Upper School (1982 to 1987) and Copleston High School (1987 to 1997) Brenchley graduated to the post of deputy head teacher at Flegg High School in Martham.

The feelings of surprise were just as strong in Martham as they were in West Runton, with former pupils and colleagues completely unaware of his crimes.
    ...
Lesley Knowles, 46, from Bensley Road, said her daughter Rachel, now 20, was also a former pupil of Brenchley.
    ...
Even in Costessey, where Brenchley abused his position of trust to start a relationship with a former pupil, there was still support for him despite the shock of what had happened.

"He's never been anything but professional," said the mum of a girl who is currently in year seven at Costessey."We've never heard anything bad about him. He's always stood out on the roundabout to make sure the children are leaving the school properly."

Brenchley stated on Friends Reunited that he enjoyed running and swimming and he took part in the Norwich Half Marathon in 2005 finishing 990th in a time of 2hrs 31mins 50 secs.He listed on Friends Reunited that his favourite bands included Coldplay and Keane.

His eldest son Jonathan, 18, was a promising footballer and played for Holt United, although he is now believed to be backpacking in Australia, where he has spent some time on a banana farm.

Mrs Brenchley used to be head of languages at Cromer High School but more recently worked as an outreach support worker.

Head teacher: Stephen Brenchley abused trust

The head teacher of the school where Brenchley groomed the teenage pupil for a sexual relationship today branded it the worst case he had ever encountered.

Costessey High School head teacher Philip May said Brenchley had abused the school's trust through his actions.
    ...
"Mr Brenchley was able to conceal his actions from colleagues and the charges indicate that Mr Brenchley had done so in a previous school.

"The other incident of a pupil who had been at Suffolk had been kept quiet for several years. The girl came forward in her 30s when she read about this case in the paper."

He said Brenchley had confided in a close friend and colleague at the school that he had worked with for years before he came to the school.

Brenchley is due to be sacked in 10 days time when school governors meet.
    ...
"Stephen Brenchley has abused a very senior position and abused the trust that the governors and I placed in him.I am sorry for the distress he has caused, not least to his victim and her family and friends, to whom I pass on my deepest sympathies.

"I want to reassure parents and pupils that we will not tolerate such behaviour and will continue to do all we can, working with our colleagues at Norfolk County Council children's services, to safeguard and promote the well-being of all pupils at Costessey High School."

A spokeswoman for Norfolk County Council said full Criminal Record Bureau checks had been carried out on Brenchley and no previous incidents or concerns were raised.
