In early September, Charlie Brenchley was only a block away from Dawson College in Montreal when his cell phone rang informing him of the shooting there.
He says the event pushed him to get more involved in learning skills that he's hoping to share as the new waterfront director at MacKenzie Camp this summer.
"The main thing is just learning how to communicate with people, and in a way you have to realize what situation you're in and everyone is unique and deal with things in different ways," Brenchley says."It helps me see that every camper - every kid - is unique and you have to explain it to them in a way that works for them."
Having had a great deal of experience with camps in the past, Brenchley, who received his National Life Saving certificate nearly two years ago, is the lifeguard for the camp this year. But Brenchley has more to worry about than just ensuring the most possible fun for campers.June 1 was the official start of his term as student union president at Dawson College.
While spending his summer at Mabel Lake, he will need to communicate and work together with his union members to make sure the start of the next year will go smoothly.
But dealing with people and tough situations seems to be right up Brenchley's alley.
"It's a lot of planning and organizing programs and activities," said Brenchley about his job as a student union president and working at MacKenzie camp."So here, I'm the lifeguard, but I also help with other programs."
Brenchley will continue to work at MacKenzie Camp until he returns to Montreal in early August. He says he will dedicate his time to make sure campers have a great, fun time.
