Brence wasn't on Plano's state 7-on-7 team last weekend. There were 20 players on the roster. He didn't play on varsity last year, and didn't intercept a pass in a state quarterfinal game against Southlake Carroll as a freshman (Burkhead did).He isn't likely to play on varsity. He may never play receiver at Plano.

I understand this list is partly based on potential, but this just cries of something wrong. It begs the question, where did Texas Football get its information in 2006 and 2008?From former coach Gerald Brence? From one of Plano's assistant coaches?Could this have really happened? Please tell me no. Please tell that when coaches turn in this information, that they understand that these lists must have integrity.I say that as someone that compiled The Dallas Morning News' Area Top 100 for three years.

A Plano insider has told me Brence will be a good football player at Plano.I will be the first one to write about Brence if he's one of the Top 20 seniors in 2011, or even if he's not.I hope he's a team captain and leads Plano to a state title.I hope he gets a scholarship like his brothers.

Plano Senior High School football coach Gerald Brence has two jobs, two desks, and two titles for the time being. But they will all fold soon enough into his new responsibilities as athletic director of Plano Independent School District. The district officially introduced Brence as athletic director Tuesday morning following a week of interviews by a search committee.

    Gerald Brence

Brence, who has worked at Plano Senior High in numerous roles for the past 26 years, will continue serving as head football coach and the athletic director for the Plano ISD central cluster schools until the season is over. Brence has been head football coach at Plano for 15 years and has the second-most career wins in the district's history. Plano ISD will hire a new head coach and central cluster director after the season to allow Brence to concentrate solely on his new position."It is great for the district to have this much confidence in me and in this position," Brence said in an interview Tuesday afternoon."It's an honor and a pleasure to serve in this role."Brence's appointment takes effect Aug. 30, but he said he has already started working in his new role. "I'm planning to be in that office later this week," he said."We have to get going, getting this school year started."As athletic director, Brence said he looks forward to supporting the momentum the athletic department has established in recent years. Its current initiatives include renovation of Clark Stadium, recent elimination of athletic fees, and development of strategies for a financially independent department. "[Brence] is being called upon to reinforce the direction taken by the Plano ISD athletic program in recent years, and I am confident he will be successful in this position based upon a legacy of excellence in his past roles," Plano Superintendent Doug Otto said in a statment released by the district.Brence was one of 13 applicants for the position, each of whom was interviewed by the search committee. He was one of the district's five internal applicants.

Brence said he offered new ideas for improvements to the search committee, but declined to elaborate on those ideas for this article."There are new opportunities coming," he said."In education, things evolve, and there will be new things to address. But right now we'll work toward getting school started in a good direction."Brence succeeds Cliff Odenwald, who resigned last month to join the Universtiy Interscholastic League staff in Austin.
