Where an individual user might see spam as a simple nuisance, Scott Bremner, manager of network infrastructure and telecommunications at the Dufferin-Peel Catholic district school board, sees a bigger picture.

"We have 8000 employees on e-mail. If each one of them is spending a couple of minutes a day dealing with junk mail, that adds up to a surprising amount over time. Even if we were just counting salary costs, everyone is scrambling and doesn't have enough hours in the day to do the things they're supposed to be doing."

Besides wasting employee time, spam can also strain bandwidth and server capacity, as well as putting e-mail servers at risk to hostile activity from the Internet via SMTP hacks and malformed messages. For Mr. Bremner, increasing amounts of spam soon made it clear that a separate solution was in order.

"We wanted an independent facility to handle external e-mail, independent of our internal e-mail infrastructure," he said.

Fortunately, that solution came in the form of a plug-and-play security system by BorderWare Technologies called MXtreme 3.0, a product that seems to be successfully reducing the tide of spam at the school board.

"Now that we have MXtreme in place we're rejecting around 20,000 spams a week, around 20 to 25 per cent of our inbound," says Mr. Bremner. "In the last seven days it's been 105,000 accepted, 23,000 rejected."

For Mr. Bremner, the decision to go with BorderWare's solution was not a difficult one.

"We already had a relationship with BorderWare, we've been using their firewall product for years," says Mr. Bremner, "We were familiar with the architecture, which has a very secure kernel to the operating system and it doesn't run on top of a general operating system.

As Dufferin-Peel Catholic district school board's Mr. Bremner sees it, eliminating spam is just one more way that he can help things run more smoothly for his 8,000 users, allowing them to get on with their real jobs. Says Mr. Bremner, "This improves their workday quality of life."

It's a keystone for our future technology plans," said Scott Bremner, Manager of Network Infrastructure and Telecommunications at the Dufferin-Peel Board.
