Not so for Karl Branch and the volunteers who serve on Savannah Presbytery's Disaster Assistance teams.
Branch, a retired Centers for Disease Control computer specialist who is a member of White Bluff Presbyterian Church, is volunteer coordinator of the presbytery's disaster-assistance teams. He downplays the role he assumed earlier this year, saying "I'm just the coordinator" and praises the hard work and dedication of "the many men and women who volunteer their time, their efforts and their money."Branch coordinates whatever is necessary to make the teams' relief visits successful. He makes sure volunteers have a place to stay, their meals are provided and they have gift cards to purchase building supplies to complete their assignment.

Contractors are hard to come by for individual families, Branch said."There are some residences being rebuilt, but the problem is that available contractors that are worth a flip are being gobbled up by heavy industry and the gambling industry. The average Joe Blow, if he was lucky enough that the insurance company settled with him and he had the money, is having a tough time finding people to do the work for him."So, the people whose houses could be lived in, they are relying in large part on volunteers."Help is offered to all, Branch said, regardless of the recipients' religious faith or beliefs, race, or other factors.

Branch and his wife, Phyllis, have been married 48 years.
