It's normally not a good idea to Strasburg utilities director Ron Tewalt, a worthwhile venture for Woodstock Town Manager Larry Bradford, and a case-by-case situation for Mt. Jackson Town Manager Charlie Moore.
...
The proximity of New Market to Broadway is what helps, Bradford said. The county had eyed using the wastewater facility at the former Aileen plant near Edinburg as a regional sewer plant several years ago, offering service from Mt. Jackson to Edinburg, he said.
The 12-mile sewer line along U.S. 11 that was needed, however, turned out to be too expensive, Bradford said.New Market, on the other hand, needs but about a four-mile pipe to run along U.S. 211 to get to Broadway's plant, which is in Timberville.
"In this area, the northern end of the county, plants are so far apart that the cost of having one facility would probably be outweighed by the [high] cost of [extending pipes to it]," Bradford said.
He said cost savings make him a proponent of regionalization, whether it be a jail, transportation or wastewater plant.
