Larissa Bradford, team leader in the pollution prevention and education program of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, says there are ways to alleviate damage to the environment while enjoying outdoor activities.

Bradford suggests if a group of people , such as two families or a group of friends , are going to the lake they should carpool.It saves gas money and the environment.Once at the lake, there are a few techniques the EPA suggests to lower the impact of using a boat (see the box of tips).
Bradford added, "some boat owners dump their waste in the lake, make sure to dump in designated areas."

Some East Texans might say that barbecuing on anything but a charcoal grill isn't "real" barbecue at all.While the taste might be different, using a gas-powered barbecue grill is much better for the environment and health, Bradford said.

Whether barbecuing or just having a picnic outside on the fourth, Bradford, with the environmental quality commission, said it's best to buy all food products in bulk.
"That way there's less packaging and therefore you're not producing as much waste," she said.
