To this end I applaud the efforts of the Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association (TFGA) through their Chief Executive Officer Greg Bradfield who are looking at a three tiered program to cover awareness, a practical program involving a demonstration and practice in the use of an ATV and a frequent users program.

The witnesses' responses to an educational program gave me great cause for concern but I would hope, indeed from hearing other farmers I believe, they were not indicative of an overall view within the agricultural industry.Michael CROSS conceded he had had no formal training in riding ATVs but had been riding for several years. He was aware of the safety warnings on the bike but had never read the manufacturer's manual. His rhetorical response to the inquest on the possibility of a training program was

Tasmania's Farmers and Graziers Association (FGA) spokesman Greg Bradfield says authorities will inspect the ship in this morning to ensure conditions on board meet animal welfare standards.

"There is a a fully-qualified vet and also a qualified accredited stockman to ensure that the animal welfare standards on that boat are fully upheld and it's done in the best possible manner," he said.

Mr Bradfield says the exports are vital for the ongoing health of the state's sheep-meat industry.

"This shipment contains over 50,000 sheep and their value to the industry is round about $2.5 million at the farm-gate and this is a substantial income for farmers in what has been historically a depressed wool market over the last few years," he said.

Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association chief executive officer Greg Bradfield said an established fox population would wreak havoc on the state's economy and could cost the agricultural sector up to $8 million a year.

An agricultural worker discovered the carcase on a northern midlands road last week, prompting fears the recently discovered population was gaining a foothold.

The state was believed to be fox free until a report from the Canberra-based Invasive Animals Cooperative Research Centre (IACRC) confirmed their presence in June.

Mr Bradfield said the IACRC research showed the population was still at a level where foxes could be eradicated, but the government needed to allocate sufficient resources to control them.

Farmers and Graziers Association chief executive Greg Bradfield says it is ludicrous to cut resources when there were 120 reports of fox sightings in the state last year.

"The industry can't afford a fox population build up in the state and we're still having fairly reliable sightings around the state, although infrequently," he said.
