Being able to say, 'I'm sorry -- forgive me -- that's OK,' is not a skill that is often taught," Bradfield said.
Within the class, students are challenged to understand the complexities of asking for forgiveness and granting it as well.There are benefits and consequences of forgiveness, she says, and her course examines its social and religious effects.
"In asking for forgiveness, you must acknowledge that you are not perfect.I teach my students that we can be flawed and yet still remain valuable," Bradfield said.
Delyse Steyn, chairperson of communications at Andrews University, said that Bradfield has personality expertise -- a caring quality evident both inside and outside of the classroom.
"If we are to teach communications, then we should be able to communicate well with students ourselves," Steyn said.
Bradfield teaches freshman communication courses and she received the student-voted and faculty-voted, non-tenured Teacher of the Year awards.
She joined the faculty at Andrews in 1998.
Bradfield received her bachelor of arts degrees in communication and English from Helderberg College in South Africa in 1988.In 1997, she completed her master's of arts degree in English literature at Rand Afrikaans University in Johannesburg, South Africa.Bradfield lives in Berrien Springs with her husband, Derek Karl Bradfield, and their son, Ashley-Blaine Bradfield.
