    Dr. Vivian Boyd has been associated with Counseling Centers for over 25 years.She has been Training Director, Assistant Director and, since 1989, Director of one of the most influential Counseling Centers in the country, the University of Maryland - College Park Counseling Center.She is also Associate Professor of Education in the Department of Counseling and Personnel Services, College of Education .

    Dr. Boyd has been a leader in the accreditation movement for counseling centers.She was elected president of the International Association of Counseling Services in 2001, and currently is completing her term past-president of the association.She has been on the Accreditation Board of the International Association of Counseling Services College and University Sector since 1994, serving as vice chair and then chair of the Board.She also served a three year term on the AUCCCD Governing Board.In 2002, Dr. Boyd was recipient of the prestigious Senior Professional Annuit Coeptis Award presented by the American College Personnel Association.Another honor she received is the 1998 Thomas M. Magoon Distinguished Service Award for performance in the tradition of outstanding scholar practitioner, awarded by Counseling and Personnel Services at ACPA.She has authored chapters in three books and many other scholarly publications, including being senior author of the most recently revised "Accreditation Standards for University and College Counseling Centers ." She has given nearly 50 scholarly presentations at professional conferences and meetings.

    To say that Dr. Boyd has been a dominant force in the network of counseling centers seems to understate the impact she has had on the lives of so many of her students and colleagues.She is an extremely dedicated and knowledgeable individual, whose exceptional insight into contemporary issues confronting counseling and psychology, education, politics, and other subjects are seldom matched.

    She is an individual who has an endless capacity for giving, a heart full of caring, and a sensitivity to other's feelings and circumstances which provides a constant source of nurturance and support. her energy is always focused on improving the quality of life of the human condition.

    Thirteen states and four cities have experienced an increased demand for alcohol and drug treatment since September 11th, according to a telephone survey of the individuals who oversee offices of substance abuse services in the states, the District of Columbia and the 10 largest U.S. cities According to Dr. Vivian Boyd of the International Association of Counseling Services, there has been a marked increase in traffic at university counseling centers.She estimates a 17-22% increase across the country, with a greater increase in centers closer to New York City.

    Recent attacks at Martin Luther King Jr. High School in New York City and the Appalachian Law School in Grundy, Virginia remind us of our society's desperate need for greater mental health awareness and support.
