The Police Officer Reading Program is intended to paint a positive portrait of police officers while improving literacy, said Sheridan speech and language pathologist Patsy Bowles.

The program helps so "the kids don't see them just as police officers, but as friends as well," Bowles said.

"We want our children to know that these officers are men and women they can trust if they have a problem and need help," Bowles said.

The collaboration stems from a communitywide Early Childhood Task Force created several years ago by Patsy Bowles, a speech and language pathologist at Sheridan Elementary School.
