   Some people sit around and complain about their lives, but other people take action. Even when David Bouffard of Newport was stocking shelves as a stock boy at the Fedele's grocery store, which was located on Main Street for generations, he knew that hard work could take a person a long way.

   A man from a family of grocers, David joined the Grand Union chain as a young man. From there it was no looking back. He married his wife, Beth, and began working his way up the ladder. In time, he became the manager of the Grand Union store in Newport, which was located where RJ's Market is located today.
   
   Some people credit luck for the Bouffards' success, but for anyone who knows them, their climb from a struggling young couple to two of the most respected, and humble business people in Orleans County, know it had nothing to do with luck but with hard work! They are now the owners of the Derby Village Store on Main Street in Derby.
   
   At the annual meeting January 19th David was voted in as the Chair of the Board of Trustees. The board governs North Country Hospital and Health System. He replaced Dr. Brian Riggie who retired from the position in January.
   
   "I'm honored and humbled to be the chairman," David said. "I'm looking forward to the challenge, and I'm looking forward to keeping alive the tradition of North Country, providing the community with excellent medical care, care that people have learned to trust."
   
   David has great praise for his predecessor, Dr. Riggie.

   In comparison, David said he is beginning his tenure as chairman during an exciting, and less turbulent time. Not only does he have confidence in the current administrative team, he is also proud of the entire hospital staff, some of whom he has known his entire life.
   
   "We have the finest physicians and the best and most dedicated staff as any other health care organization," David said proudly.

   Born and raised in Newport, one of three children born to Gerard and Francis Bouffard, David graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Newport in 1975.

   "Serving on the board is more than attending a meeting now and then," David said. "It's about community relations and working to do what is best for the health system and the people it serves." Having served on the board from 1994-2000, he agreed to return to the board in 2003. The role of the chairman of the board is to work closely with the other board members and to preside over the board meetings. The chairman also serves as the voice of the board within the community.
   
   David praised the other members of the board for their dedication to the health system.
