   As project manager in the Houston office of Keane Inc., Mike Boudreaux works with information systems organizations that implement desktop applications.
   
   Boudreaux, who graduated from the University of North Texas with a bachelor of business administration degree in information systems, first became involved in software applications while on a consulting project, designing and building a resource and scheduling system at a nuclear power plant. He said the evolvement of client-server systems sparkled his interest in the field.
   
   "I went into clients' offices, took existing systems and converted them on application software Powerbuilder and Visual Basic," Boudreaux said.

   Boudreaux defined a typical situation as "when the client is in a hurry to get off a legacy system because it's costing so much money." The sluggish design and analysis phase always impacts the back end of the project; but, more time spent in designing and analyzing will cut down actual time in coding and implementation, he said.
   
   Boudreaux acknowledged the business is very competitive and a large number of software companies specifically outsource personnel with the skill set for this type of work. "Designer and analysts are very limited because basically, the job depends on their degree of experience and knowledge in design, prior to designing and building systems over a long time frame," he said.

   "The computer software designer should understand software design specifications, understand object-oriented design and analysis standards and/or methodologies, have good communication skills, and have a high level of skill with relational data bases and GUI (graphical user interface) design and development," Boudreaux said.
