Boxer Phil Boudreault has turned professional, his first fight is Jan. 19 at Casino Rama.
...
Many people thought Phil Boudreault's boxing career was over. But after 10 wasted years in and out of jail, Boudreault is back in the ring as a professional boxer having obtained his licence and clearing a battery of tests earlier this month.
Boudreault will fight Jan. 19 at Casino Rama in Orillia in an under card bout on the Rumble at the Rama event, which features the Steve Molitor IBF featherweight championship fight. Boudreault will face Tebor Brosch, who is 1-1-1 as a pro.

In Atlanta, Boudreault finished fourth overall in the 63.5-kilogram division after losing a controversial decision to Russia's Edward Zakharov.
...
Boudreault had stopped Haji Matumla of Tanzania in the first round in his first Olympic bout.
What followed the high of the Olympic Games was a 10-year downward spiral that led Boudreault into a negative lifestyle of bad decisions and criminal behaviour.
Boudreault was arrested numerous times for assaulting people and having motorcycle gang connections.
In August of 2005, Boudreault was facing a dangerous offender tag after a punch up in a local bar in 2004 left a man with a broken jaw. He was given a two-year sentence, declared a long-term offender and ordered to severe his ties with motorcycle gang members. He was on parole for five years after being released from jail in 2007.
clip Prosecutors wanted Boudreault declared a dangerous offender.

Boudreault's manager, Terry Witzu, is impressed by the level of dedication Boudreault has shown since the summer of 2007.
...
"Phil has one of those incredible wills," said Witzu.
...
"Phil has become a pro athlete...and when one makes that decision, they leave everything behind. In respect to the past, it's time to move on. This is the best thing for Phil.
"He has a God-given talent and it's time for him to exercise it. He has a late start, but when you have Phil's ability and determination, it doesn't matter."
Boudreault knows he's lucky to get this chance to box again and will make the most of it. He sold his Harley Davidson motorcycle to help finance the comeback to pay for sparring partners and other costs associated with trying to become a professional champion.
Boudreault admits he made mistakes and is willing to pay for them as he rebuilds his life in the community. He has also accepted responsibility for his past actions.
"When I look in the mirror, I see the same man I always was, just sober," said Boudreault.

From a boxers point of view, Phil has embarressed the boxing community. The media always tagged along an "ex-olympic boxer" when mentionning his name along with his crimes. Boxing is a sport that has already enough trouble from being seen as nothing but savage, what he did, did not help.

Boudreault is a dangerous person. Something the courts and police don't take lightly. It doesn't come as a whim. It's a chosen lifestyle that is part of you. He had the backing of all Canada. He chose the path he went down. Boudreault is a menace and deserves one last fair fight. One where he will get the long overdue thrashing he deserves. Where no pals or patches can protect him. On Thursday, January 10, 2008 at 06:32, Oliver said: You don't deserve any support. Phil you are a convicted criminal.

My very good friend and fighter Mr. Phil Boudreault and I have felt tremendous encouragement from a multitude of friendly Sudburians during this difficult past 6 months. Unfortunately we have encountered some folks that do not want to let Mr. Boudreault get started with his new life. Phil has paid his debt to society and has turned the corner towards a successful professional future.
...
He is 31 years of age, was not training while in jail ... and his ongoing attraction with the criminal elements of our society will prevent him from becoming a contender in Canada. At least, Phil is living his period of glory on Face Book and in this Northern Life blog.

Phil Boudreault, a former Olympic boxer, has been committed to trial on charges of threatening violence against two police officers. After a brief preliminary hearing Tuesday, Justice R. Flaherty committed Boudreault to trial on allegations he threatened two officers with the Greater Sudbury Police Service during a bail hearing April 20. The bail hearing took place five days after Boudreault was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, relating to an incident in a Valley East drinking establishment in March.
...
After hearing the evidence, Flaherty said there was enough evidence to commit Boudreault to trial on two charges of threatening violence against two different officers and uttering death threats against both officers.
...
Boudreault's lawyer Glenn Sandberg conceded Boudreault was on probation at the time of this incident.
...
A date for Boudreault's aggravated assault trial is expected to be set within the next couple of weeks, and at that time Sandberg said he hopes to get a date for a jury trial on this latest series of charges. Boudreault had remained out of trouble with the law for more than two years before allegations surfaced about the incident in the Valley East bar in March. Boudreault represented the Top Glove Boxing Academy and Canadian National Boxing Team at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Boudreault, who is a member of the Hells Angels, was talkative and conversed with friends during the preliminary hearing. Boudreault has been in custody at the Sudbury district jail since being denied bail in late April.
