Daniel Boudreau
...
When the words Founding Fathers are mentioned, chances are the name Daniel Boudreau may not leap to mind, but the truth is that when it comes to our community heritage, Danny has been there since the beginning. He is the only current Carolina Lakes resident to sign the Articles of Incorporation in 1982, and his cozy lakefront home is one of the first built in this community. So, how did that happen?
Danny's roots trace back to Peoria, Illinois where he was the youngest of three children. His father was a coach who taught adult education at night and who chose to earn his master's degree in adult education through four summers of work in Colorado. Then, when Danny was nine and in the third grade, the family of five moved to Fayetteville where his father became president of Fayetteville Technical College.Danny graduated from Terry Sanford High School and then went to Asheville for a degree in restaurant/hotel management. He worked for a year before he and his brother together managed a Dairy Queen; at one time, the brothers managed four. Now, the brother works elsewhere, and Danny is happy to oversee just one DQ site.

Danny and Mary have two girls, Shelle who is a sophomore at NC State majoring in civil engineering and math, and Katie who is one of the top students in her sophomore class at Overhills High School.

Danny's happily retired father lives in Lillington with Danny's sister.
From Fayetteville to Carolina Lakes is not a long distance, but perhaps it took a leap of faith to envision a community where only trees could be seen at the time!Danny was familiar with the general area because his parents owned a cottage at Buffalo Lake, a wonderful place for their summer vacations. He remembers riding horses up and down the dirt road, which we now call Buffalo Lake Road. When Carolina Lakes was in its incipient stages, those who were developing the community held a cocktail party for area folks, potential residents, at the gatehouse; yes, that's right, not the non-existent clubhouse..Though there were no paved roads here at that time, there were divisions or sections, and Danny remembers walking with a map into various areas, trying to decide where they might like to live.A lottery was held, and after choosing a section, ten properties were drawn.Danny received his first choice, a beautiful lot on Crystal Lake.He also bought several other lots with brother and sister joining right in there.

Danny served on the first Carolina Lakes Board of Directors, which met monthly and dealt with all sorts of challenges from collecting absentee fees to who knows what else! The clubhouse, swimming pool, and tennis courts were in place within a year as promised, and there were plans to have a marina near the swimming pool area, one that would allow boaters to connect from that docking area to the marina area still in use today. Each housing phase was to be a little different from another; with starburst designs on homes in one area and patio homes the option in another. Not all those plans materialized, of course. When his three-year term expired, Danny decided to be done with the board work.
Today, Danny believes Carolina Lakes is a great place to raise children, a safer place than most. When highway 87 became four-lane, the growth-related problems presented themselves, from speculators to the usual family-related issues of living in community. He sees the future of the community requiring incorporation, and he believes the immense increase in population merits more video monitoring to protect residents. He would love to see part of the clubhouse used as a restaurant, open at least part-time, and he believes the youth and others would benefit from pool tables and other recreational opportunities available at the clubhouse."Hire someone to supervise," he says to naysayers. He would also like to see residents pulling together rather than promoting petty concerns.
Beyond the community, Danny is active in several national Dairy Queen ventures and serves as First Vice-President of Western Harnett Lions Club of which he is a charter member. His "Lion's Share" of the work this year went towards the club's annual golf tournament.Danny also works for and with the Miracle Network. He continues to manage the Sanford Dairy Queen and several commercial properties.Danny is quick to say that he much prefers free time to money and that he enjoys driving taxi for his daughter, Katie. He has also started to play golf again, now that his days of coaching Little League basketball and softball are behind him.
Danny sees good kids everywhere he looks, and he tells his own and others who will listen to "Be nice to people!"He does not believe in taking life too seriously and far prefers family time to being on the job.Years ago, his dad decided to drive to Augusta on a whim to see if he could get through the gates to watch them play golf at the Masters' Tournament.Everyone told him he would never get in, but he went regardless. He did not get in to see the action, but this fact did not faze him one bit.In fact, the story leads Danny to share favorite words of wisdom from his father to this founding father of ours: "It never hurts to ask.
