Carla Boudreau, communications manager for EDS Canada Inc., also points to the number of businesses that have either expanded or relocated to the Welton Street area of Sydney to accommodate the 1,100 EDS employees who work in that area.
The customer contact business is a major industry in this province.

Ms. Boudreau says that the plan is to eventually fill the building to its capacity of 450.
The mainland is benefiting from customer contact centre jobs as well.Convergys in Dartmouth and New Glasgow announced plans during the year to expand their staffs dramatically - by 550 people in Dartmouth alone.
Another company, Service Zone, announced plans to open centres in Cornwallis and in Queen's County employing 400 in Cornwallis and 200 in Liverpool.

Ms. Boudreau says that she sees a number of students who have completed their education at University College of Cape Breton, Saint Francis Xavier University or other local universities who don't want to have to go down the road to Halifax or Toronto to work.
A job at the customer contact centre means they don't have to do that.It is also a place where many of the wives of former miners and steelworkers can find full-time employment.
"Many of these women have not worked for many years," Ms. Boudreau said."Their husbands are now receiving pensions and they're taking advantage of the jobs available to get out and earn money on their own.Ten years ago, there were no options for these women; today we're seeing 'now hiring' signs and job fairs."

Ms. Boudreau agrees.
"EDS is a Fortune 100 company.As a result, companies looking for a new location will look at an area like Nova Scotia and ask 'what is it about this location that makes companies like EDS move to that area?'"
