When Donald Boucher, owner of Courtesy Auto Sales in Chesapeake, was having trouble securing prompt payments from his customers, he set out to find a solution. He came across On Time and has not had to repossess a car since, he said.
On Time is a payment protection system that is equipped in the cars of buyers with poor credit to remind them when a payment is due.The system uses microprocessor-based technology to disable the start-up of a vehicle if a payment is not secured on time.
"If you don't pay your light bill, your lights get cut off," Boucher said."This works the same way."
In business for 31 years, Boucher said he has noticed a pattern with buyers with bad credit.
"Whoever bothers them the most is who they pay," he said.
...
Because Courtesy Auto Sales provides in-house financing and finances customers with high credit scores to those with severe credit problems, Boucher has witnessed this first hand, he said.He found that people with bad credit generally cannot secure car loans from big conventional banks.
By using the device, Boucher said he has turned those with low credit scores into reliable customers who can get access to loans with lower interest rates.
Car dealer Hason Elsayad said he has not had any customer complaints about On Time.Elsayad owns Car Plus Auto Sales in Newport News and over the last five months has equipped 15 cars with the device, he said.
"I had customers that came when they felt like coming (to pay), and this product gives me control," Elsayad said.
He spends about $230 for each device and equips them in the cars of customers who are regularly late, plus the cars of most of his first-time customers.Elsayad said the investment in the technology was worth it.
"Even if they don't have the money, they get me my money from somewhere," he said.
How the On Time system works
Every time a buyer makes a payment, he receives a code to punch into the On Time system.
