METS, BOTTALICO AGREE ON DEAL
...
Ricky Bottalico
...
February 9, 2004 -- Thirsty for relief depth, the Mets have agreed in principle to a minor-league deal with free-agent set-up man Ricky Bottalico. The contract should be made official today.
Bottalico, a 34-year-old right-hander, spent most of last season with Arizona's Triple-A club, appearing in two games with the Diamondbacks and going 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA. But Bottalico discovered at the end of last season that he had been pitching with a bone bruise in his shoulder. Now that it's repaired, he's back throwing 91-92 mph, according to his agent, Gregg Clifton.
Bottalico also missed part of the 2002 season with a torn labrum. That year in 30 games with Philadelphia, he posted a 4.61 ERA.
Bottalico will compete for a bullpen spot with fellow right-handers Jason Anderson, Grant Roberts (if Roberts doesn't become the fifth starter), Dan Wheeler, Jeremy Hill and Orber Moreno.
