Dr. Gary Botimer, Orthopedist of Saltzer Medical Group, and Mercy Medical Center of Nampa are the first in the U.S. to perform surgery using the new technology; Galileo Computer Assisted Surgery. This system, a computer and a robot, enables Dr. Botimer to precisely position the knee replacement prosthesis in a total knee replacement surgery. The goal is to recreate the patient's natural knee as closely as possible, with perfect alignment from the hip to the ankle. The system was designed to be precise within one tenth of a millimeter, which cannot be achieved by the usual procedure. The Galileo, which was recently approved by the FDA, was pioneered in Europe and has been used successfully in over 2000 surgeries there. The U.S. distributor, Plus Orthopedics, selected Dr. Botimer and Mercy Medical Center as a beta site. The technology is currently available for knee replacement only, but will be available for hip replacement in time. Dr. Botimer has presented his first 50 cases at an international symposium in San Diego, CA.
