Jane Boswell, counselor at Rucker Boulevard Elementary School, believes the key to gaining students' trust is giving them respect.
"I respect them so much," she said. "When you respect them, they respect you back and can open up to you. I open up my heart to them and then they know that whatever they say is important to me, and I'm not going to judge them in any way. They know they can trust me."
Boswell has been in education for 26 years - 24 of those years have been spent at Rucker Boulevard. However, this is her first year as counselor. She began the year teaching third grade when she was approached about the counselor position.
"I had to pray, and I know it was the Lord's will," Boswell said. "When school started I had no idea I'd be here, and I'm loving it."
As a counselor, Boswell is able to interact with all grade levels and visit all the classrooms. Among her many duties, she teaches character education. She instills in students the importance of qualities such as responsibility and honesty.
"I feel these are values they'll take with them to make them strong, productive individuals," Boswell said. "In a sense, it makes them feel good about themselves if they can use those values in their lives."
The bottom line, according to Boswell, is that she works for the children. They are her priority, and she makes decisions based on what she would want for a child of her own.
"It's about helping children to see that someone does believe in them," she said. -
