Boswell, latterly described in his own club,s Annals as ,silver haired and silver tongued,, was a thirty-two-year-old lawyer who would serve as the R.C.Y.C.,s commodore fourteen times and be elected Toronto,s mayor in 1883.He would acquire a prominent role in amassing the campaign war chests of Sir John A. Macdonald,s Conservative party, and be rewarded with a King,s Council appointment in 1887.But in 1870, Boswell was still a young member of Toronto,s upperclass conservative strata, a man whose greatest achievement had been to drum up the funds necessary to build the newly completed R.C.Y.C. clubhouse on Front Street,in those days, Front Street actually fronted the harbour,opposite the provincial legislature.The club had been making do in a floating headquarters on the city,s waterfront, but general rot, accelerated by an invasion of muskrats, had urged the membership back onto solid ground.
