Police Chief Al Boston said it is against the law for a police department to solicit funds in any way.The mail campaign was brought to his attention by a resident , and Boston wants to make it clear that any money donated to the campaign will not come to the Eliot Police Department.
The campaign , put out by the Law Enforcement Alliance of America , is a survey that a reader can fill out , and at the bottom of the survey , it encourages a donation.
On the first page of the survey , it reads Eliot Area Campaign , to support the police who serve Maine , and Boston is afraid it will be misinterpreted by residents who believe they are helping their local department.
Law Enforcement Alliance of America has an address of Falls Church , Va..The survey claims Law Enforcement Alliance of America is a nonprofit group , and a representative said the goal of the organization is to fight for legislation related to lowering crime. No further information was available.
Anyone with questions regarding the campaign , are asked to call the Eliot Police Department at 207-439-1890 , or their local police department.
