    ELIOT, Maine - After more than 30 years of police work, Eliot Police Chief Al Boston has decided to retire next year.

    This move will likely be officially announced at tonight's selectmen's meeting.The meeting is set for 6:30 in the Town Hall.

    Boston has been chief since 1995.He said he feels it's time to move on.He said he plans to leave at the end of June 30 next year.

    Selectmen Roland Fernald did not want to comment this morning on the issue, since the board has taken no official action.He said the board has not accepted or officially received such a request.

    Boston doesn't know who will be his replacement, but feels he will likely be consulted about the decision.The Board of Selectmen will make the final decision.

    Boston will leave behind a physical legacy in the form of the town's new police station.During his tenure, Boston was a strong advocate for the new station which was completed in last year.

    Prior to the new building, the chief and 13 officers had been working out of a corner of the Town Hall.

    Police Chief Al Boston said it is against the law for a police department to solicit funds in any way.The mail campaign was brought to his attention by a resident , and Boston wants to make it clear that any money donated to the campaign will not come to the Eliot Police Department.

    The campaign , put out by the Law Enforcement Alliance of America , is a survey that a reader can fill out , and at the bottom of the survey , it encourages a donation.

    On the first page of the survey , it reads Eliot Area Campaign , to support the police who serve Maine , and Boston is afraid it will be misinterpreted by residents who believe they are helping their local department.

    Law Enforcement Alliance of America has an address of Falls Church , Va..The survey claims Law Enforcement Alliance of America is a nonprofit group , and a representative said the goal of the organization is to fight for legislation related to lowering crime.No further information was available.

    Police Chief Al Boston said he will hire the new officers and expects them on the beat by the summer after finishing training.

    For the past eight months, the department has been working with a staff of 15.The hiring will bring the force back up to 17, which, according to Boston, has been the normal number in the past.

    "We have to send them to school and then hope to have them by the summer," Boston said.

    The new officers will complement the opening of a new 5,600-square-foot facility in February.The Police Department is currently housed in an 850-square-foot annex of the Town Hall.
