It's a part of the morning routine and is integral to the citizenship theme of the school, McKinley Principal Malinda Bostick said.

"It's something we choose to do because we are proud of the flag," she said.

Soon, however, there might not be a choice.

A new state law mandates that all public and private school students recite the Pledge of Allegiance or sing the national anthem every day.

It is a law that doesn't sit well with Bostick.

"This is a country that prides itself on freedom," she said. "Freedom of our country means the choice to respect the flag. I don't think it should be mandated."

The American Civil Liberties Union agrees, and it has filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia on behalf of the Circle School in Harrisburg.

The ACLU is arguing that the law violates the right to free speech.
