Dr. Jim Bostick, exec. VP of Southern Seed Certification Association, answers the question, ,What does it mean for a turfgrass to be certified?, . . . The word ,seed,, in certification terms, applies to all propagating materials, be it seed or propagated sod. . . . the ultimate purpose of seed or propagating material certification is to give the consumer assurance they are getting the variety that they are asking for. . . . Certification is accomplished through a series of inspections of the turfgrass as it moves through the process of growing in the fields and . . . being made ready for harvest and commercial use. . . . Sod producers . . . have to apply each year for certification, even on established plantings.
