So far this year, 13 of 138 Minnesota nursing homes surveyed have received citations for serious health and safety infractions, and seven of those 13 came from a six-county region in Northeastern Minnesota, according to Jeff Bostick, the financial research analyst for the Minnesota Health and Housing Alliance.I find it hard to believe that Northeastern Minnesota nursing homes offer a poorer quality of care than other nursing homes in the state. This raises the question of objectivity and consistency of various survey teams in Minnesota, an issue the nursing home associations have recently been addressing.

The staff at White Community Hospital are a wonderful group of people who perform a very difficult job with genuine compassion and respect for the elders they serve. They, along with many community residents, volunteered many hours of work to the facility and the elders we serve. They painted and decorated resident rooms, and they worked untold extra hours without pay creating an outdoor patio and a garden area that provides hours of pleasure for our residents.

Jeff Bostic, financial research analyst for the Minnesota Health and Housing Alliance, said the increases won't bankrupt nursing homes, but they are another cost chipping away at margins. The insurance cost is now up to about $400 per bed per year, which is relatively small considering the average revenue is about $130 a day, Bostic said.
