The Scientific Journey is an annual public outreach education seminar hosted by the University of Western Ontario in the spring.Each year at the Scientific Journey a science teacher in Thames Valley or the London District Catholic School Board is presented with the Bessie Borwein Teacher of the Year Award.This recognizes excellence in teaching, innovation and community outreach.Bessie Borwein is a professor at the University of Western Ontario who has made a significant contribution to the field of science throughout her life.

Dr. Bessie Borwein, formerly Assistant Dean, Research, The University of Western Ontario, has made very significant contributions to the public awareness and understanding of science particularly biomedical science.She is articulate and eloquent in speech and writing, and transmits well her profound appreciation of the value of science.In the media, and in talks to a very wide variety of audiences she has helped educate the general public about the importance of past and present biomedical research for health and well-being.Her motto is "Public Ignorance of Science is our worst Enemy".

On December 4th, the Senate Committee heard from the CFHS, the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters and Dr. Besse Borwein of the University of Western Ontario.
