    This year's Volunteer of the Year Award for emergency management was given to Gene Borochoff for his work as a Nechama volunteer and board member.

    The award was presented at the 38th annual Governor's Emergency Management Conference at the Radisson Hotel South in Bloomington in early March.Every year, the conference awards "individuals or organizations that exemplify the purpose of emergency management," according to a news release.

    Approximately 400 people were at the conference when Borochoff was presented the award.

    Nechama, Jewish Response to Disaster, is a St. Louis Park-based volunteer organization that helps homeowners and businesses prepare for and recover from natural disasters.The volunteers are most often seen helping communities when floods or tornadoes occur.

    Borochoff, a Plymouth resident, serves on the Board of Directors for Nechama and is the secretary of the organization.He is also vice president of the Minnesota Chapter of Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster.

    Borochoff has been an active member of Nechama since 1997.He has led hundreds of volunteers in giving relief throughout Minnesota during times of natural disaster, according to a news release from Nechama.

    Borochoff was presented the award by Jerry Rosendahl, director of the Division of Emergency Management for the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

    Rosendahl said that Borochoff and the Nechama organization are "a leading force in the volunteer response network that works tirelessly to provide assistance and equipment to disaster-affected residences across Minnesota.
