Former president of AASU, Pravin Boro warned that the AGP president Brindaban Goswami's decision to take Mahanta into the AGP folds, to avoid a split inside the party was not an amenable one and warned that AASU would form a new party, if situation demanded it.

Pravin Boro said that AGP was formed in 1985 at Golaghat to protest against the disregard shown by the national party towards the state's regional issues and it was after a six year long 'axom andulan' during which as many as 800 youths lost their lives that the party finally came to power.

Talking to newspersons here this morning, the president of the AASU, Mr Prabin Boro said that even though the Assam Accord, which was the outcome of the six-year-long peaceful democratic anti-foreigners movement by the people of Assam, had become irrelevant for the rulers sitting in Delhi and Dispur due to their vested political interests, the Accord was still very dear for the AASU, and it would continue its fight for implementation of the Accord. It is sheer negligence and reluctance on the part of the Centre and the Assam Government that had made the Assam Accord gather dust and thus aggravate the burning problem of unabated infiltration of Bangladeshi nationals across the border instead, he said, adding that the scrapping of the IM(DT) Act was a must to solve the vexed illegal infiltration in the State.

Former All Assam Students' Union (AASU) president Prabin Boro, who contested the elections for the first time, candidly admitted that tension is growing with every passing day with his supporters bringing in new calculations. He admitted that for him, his political career is at stake and he is facing sleepless nights."The tension is much more than waiting for the results of the examinations. After an examination, you know how you fared but here you never know for sure whether the people voted for you or not," he pointed out.He also expressed the view that for future elections, the Election Commission should take steps to declare the results as soon as possible.

For Transport Minister Anjan Dutta, the gap between the elections and the counting of votes was the time for holidaying with his family members.Talking to this correspondent from Delhi, Dutta said that in the last five years, he could not give any time to his family members and " to reduce the tension of predicting the outcome of the polls, I decided to enjoy a holiday with my family members.I have visited Kashmir, Mathura, and Agra etc. With the burden of the responsibilities of a Minister off my shoulders, I am enjoying a well-earned holiday."He said that he managed to revive the Assam State Transport Corporation and the Assam Tea Corporation and if the people appreciate such works, "I will be voted back to power and if not, I will lose.

GUWAHATI, Jan 10 - The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) will receive a boost before the ensuing polls to the Assam Legislative Assembly as former All Assam Students' Union (AASU) president Prabin Boro is joining the party tomorrow.Talking to The Assam Tribune today, Boro, who was the president of the AASU from 1999 to 2005, said that he decided to join active politics to serve the people of the State and asserted that he would never compromise on the demand for a permanent solution to the problem of infiltration of foreigners. He said that he came into the public life from the platform of the AASU and as a politician, he would continue to fight on the issues raised by the AASU, including solution to the problem of infiltration through implementation of the Assam Accord, job reservation for local youths, solution of the problem of unemployment, economic development of the State, etc.

Boro, who as the AASU president, was a bitter critic of the AGP for its failure to implement the Assam Accord, tried to justify his decision to join the regional party by saying that under the new leadership, the AGP has changed its attitude towards the problems facing the people of Assam, including the problem of infiltration of foreign nationals to the State and hoped that he would be able to persuade the leadership of the party to take a bold stand on the issues.

He said that the AGP was formed to implement the Assam Accord and though under the leadership of Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, the party failed miserably in this regard, the party under the leadership of Brindaban Goswami has adopted a totally different attitude to the issue. He also pointed out that even after joining the AGP, former AASU president Sarbananda Sonowal could continue his fight against infiltration of foreigners and his fight in the Supreme Court led to the scrapping of the Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunals) Act."If Sonowal can prove that one can continue his fight on the issues concerning the people of Assam after joining politics, there is no reason why I also cannot do the same," he added.

The former AASU president admitted that he is keen to contest the next Assembly polls from his home constituency Barama, but at the same time, he was quick to add, " I will only join the party tomorrow and it is up to the party leadership to decide whether to field me as a candidate from Barama."

Boro criticised the Congress and alleged that the party had been depriving the people of Assam since independence. He said that the Congress leaders in Delhi always meted out step-motherly treatment to Assam and the state leaders of the party could never gather the courage to go against their high command. He termed the BJP as a communal force and the ideology of the party is against the secular character of the people of Assam. When pointed out that the AGP had forged electoral alliance with the BJP in the past, he said that the AGP learnt the lesson from the mistake and hoped that the regional party would not repeat the same mistake again.

Welcome to Sentinel - [Cached Version]
Published on: 10/31/2000    Last Visited: 2/18/2002

Talking to The Sentinel over phone from Nalbari today, the AASU president Mr Prabin Boro said that the non-Bodos must be taken into confidence before finalizing the boundary of the proposed BTC.He said that the AASU units of Kokrajhar and Bongaigaon districts have been asked to collect the datas of Bodo and non-Bodo population of those villages which are supposed to be included under the BTC."This will help us to have an insight on how to amicably solve the boundary demarcation of the proposed BTC.We will request the ABSU leaders to see that the sentiments of the non-Bodos is not hurt in anyway in the process of the boundary settlement of the proposed BTC," he said.He added that the proposed meeting of the AASU and ABSU would be held after February 23.

Mr Boro said that the AASU which has been opposing the idea of further division of Assam in the name of Bodoland movement, is ready to launch a joint effort with the ABSU to remove the fear and apprehension from the minds of the non-Bodos that they would be safe in the proposed BTC.He said that the AASU has been repeatedly telling the Assam Government to ensure the socio-political and economic rights of the non-Bodos in the proposed BTC.

Expressing regrets that the AASU's stand on the proposed BTC has been misinterpreted by several non-Bodo organizations including the Kooch-Rajbongshi Union, he said that the AASU would be the first organization to protest in case the rights of the non-Bodos in the proposed BTC are infringed upon.

The AASU's decision to sit with the ABSU to discuss the boundary demarcation of the BTC is significant in view of the allegations raised by the non-Bodo organizations that many villages where the non-Bodos in a majority, are to be included in the proposed BTC.Even the Assam Government which gave a formal approval to the formation of the BTC last week, has kept the boundary demarcation of the BTC in abeyance.
