Jill Booth, D-Homer, said Friday she is interested in applying for the position. She lost to Republican John Hallacy in the District Court Judge race in November, but still wants to serve the county.

"In my campaign I indicated that I wanted to make a positive difference in the lives of Calhoun County residents, and I think this would be an opportunity to do that," said Booth, a management analyst for the Michigan Supreme Court.

Road Commission Chairman Scott Brown said Solis approached him about the seat, but that he would rather serve on the road commission.

"It's not a place I really want to be," he said.

Ratner endorses Booth for district judge
    ...
It's now a four-way race for Calhoun County District Court judge as Jill Booth announced her candidacy Friday.

But Booth is entering the race with the endorsement of outgoing Judge Marvin Ratner.
    ...
Ratner said Booth is the most qualified candidate based on experience, integrity, intelligence and temperament.
    ...
"During her term as attorney magistrate, Jill Booth performed her duties with impeccable integrity.
    ...
"Jill Booth's decisions were always made in a calm and fair manner."

Booth spent eight years with Ratner as the district court magistrate attorney.
    ...
In that quasi-judicial position, Booth said she decided civil and criminal cases, heard small claims and fulfilled other judicial duties.

Booth said she left the district court in 2007 for a job with the Michigan Supreme Court, where she is the management analyst in the State Court Administrative Office.

"What that means is I help district courts around the state," she said."I've also learned how other courts operate."

While helping the more than 100 district courts around Michigan, Booth said she's learned much more about court functions.

"I think the whole judicial system is working very well," she said."There are a lot of good people in the judiciary and they want to do the right thing."

But now is the time to come back to Battle Creek, Booth said, and the district court is where she wants to serve.

"It has been a goal of mine to become a judge, and I am dedicated to the district court," she said."It's often known as the people's court.I'd like to help people understand the system and have access to it."

Booth, a Chelsea native, has lived in Homer for the past 24 years with Mark, her husband of 31 years, and their four children.

She earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Kalamazoo College in 1975, and a juris doctorate from University of Michigan Law School in 1980.

In the race for district court judge, Booth joins county Prosecutor John Hallacy, Albion Vice Mayor George Strander and Battle Creek area attorney JoAnn Pugh-Cowens.

I am writing to support the candidacy of Jill Booth to be the next district judge. Others have already noted her experience, education and judicial temperament. I would emphasize her possession of the judicial qualities of independence and impartiality.
    ...
I have been fortunate enough to become a mediator working in the court of candidate Jill Booth. I was amazed at her professional, efficient and effective way of conducting her court.

We all have jobs to do but when someone does their job as Jill Booth has done time and time again, it must be acknowledged. I have watched, first-hand, her dedication to protecting and promoting justice for her court, our laws and all persons involved. I've watched her taking extra time to be certain all parties in her court are treated fairly with compassion, understanding and respect. One thing she constantly demonstrates, to all present, is an open/fair-minded approach to the individuals and the issues within her court.

After over 30 years of exercising my right to vote, it is with pride I now display my very first campaign sign and it is for Jill Booth, my candidate of choice. I truly believe she will be will be a tremendous asset to our court system by serving as 10th District Court judge. Jill Booth has my vote this Nov. 4 and I genuinely hope she will have yours. We need more outstanding judges like Jill Booth.
    ...
I am writing in support of Jill Booth for district judge. Jill has the experience needed to be our district judge.
    ...
In addition to the professional qualifications, Jill has the personal attributes that we need. Jill has been active in many community organizations and church activities. She is actively involved with her church and has been involved with SAFE place in addition to many other organizations. Jill has not listed all these things in her campaigning because she feels that is her responsibility as a good citizen.
    ...
Please vote for Jill Booth for district judge on November 4th.
    ...
Proud to support Booth for judge

I am a senior citizen and have been a resident of Calhoun County for many years. I have been witness to numerous political campaigns but have seldom been inclined to put a sign in my yard declaring my preference of a candidate.

This year is different. This year I am proud to display my support of Jill Booth, candidate for the 10th District Court Judge.

You may wonder why his year and this candidate. It's because I know and believe in Jill. Jill isn't playing the political game of relying on building her political power; she doesn't have any political agenda. She believes in serving the people and will do so as judge of the 10th District Court. Jill isn't going to move on to a higher elected position. She is here to stay. The 10th District Court is where she wants to serve.

We will be lucky to have a woman of her integrity serving us. Join me in voting for Jill Booth.
    ...
Jill Booth has 27 years as a licensed attorney, including eight years as your Calhoun County attorney magistrate, handling a variety of criminal, traffic and civil proceedings.

Experience counts. Do you want your new judge still learning a year from now, or do you want your judge to know what she's doing the moment she takes office, both on and off the bench? Jill Booth is experienced, capable, compassionate and ready to return to the bench. Jill has been a city attorney, village attorney, private practitioner, attorney magistrate and administrator in the 10th District Court, and she has worked with district court judges, magistrates and staff across the state as a management consultant on both legal and administrative issues.

You don't need to know calculus to figure out who is most qualified candidate for 10th District Court judge. Vote for Jill Booth.
    ...
Booth will be fair, impartial judge

After reading the letter from Tim Brutsche, I am sorry that he hasn't taken the opportunity to learn about Jill Booth. Yes Mr. Brutsche, Jill Booth not only appears to be a nice person, she is just that. She does have a law degree and she does have experience as a judicial magistrate, prosecutor, township attorney, defense attorney, law clerk, civil and real estate law experience and many other levels of experience that support her as the best candidate for district court judge. Unlike her opponent, she has been much more than a prosecutor for 20-plus years.

Because she may not run in the same circles or belong to the same church or is not in the paper frequently, please don't think that she is not a community-minded individual. Ms. Booth has been quietly, without a political agenda, volunteering her time and services to many communities. She is not playing the "political game." She is living a life of integrity, service and commitment.

Jill has been part of the American Society of Meals on Wheels; Trojan Foundation for Education, Homer Area Community Foundation; United Way; Homer Caring & Sharing; SAFE Place; Inasmuch House; County Senior Millage Allocation Committee and Cub Scouts, to name a few.

I want a judge who has already displayed that they are fair, impartial, not aligned with boards and parties that may influence decisions in their professional life. Jill Booth has done this in her position as attorney magistrate and will continue to do so as judge for the 10th District Court.

    JILL BOOTH

Booth, of Homer, has been a lawyer for 27 years and has worked in private practice, including doing prosecuting work for the City of Coldwater and working as city attorney for the Village of Homer. For eight years she worked as a magistrate and assistant court administrator for the Calhoun County District Court and in 2007 left to take a position as management analyst with the Michigan Supreme Court.

Her job with the state taught her about the courts, she said.

"I help district courts around Michigan and I have learned how other courts operate."

Booth also sees a need for an alternative to jail for some defendants.

"Jail is not the answer for a lot of people," she said.

She would like to see a sobriety or drug court in the district court "because substance abuse is often involved" in cases.

The courts also should find ways to better deal with defendants who have mental health issues.

She also would help instruct the community about the role and work of the courts.

"It is important as a judge to be involved in the community without overstepping the bounds," she said.

She proposed holding court sessions in schools to show students what happens in actual cases.

She also would work to improve technology to save money, time and mistakes.

"The more we can do to eliminate paperwork is good," she said.

Booth is woman of principle, integrity

Jill Booth was my co-worker when I was deputy court administrator and magistrate for 10th District Court.A woman of principle and integrity, she exhibited the qualities one might expect in the judiciary - discipline, even-handedness, ability to weigh varying points of view.

She is gracious and even-tempered in her dealings with a wide variety of individuals. Her education and experience have provided a rich background of experiences against which she can formulate and render decisions.

And you get a bonus, for she is a thoroughly nice person. If I knew how to give her a higher recommendation for judge of 10th District Court, I would do so.
