It's expected by the year 2012 there will be a shortage of a million nurses nationwide," said David Bonner, director of nurses at Rush Foundation Hospital in Meridian.

At the same time, baby boomers are getting older and are more likely to need nursing care.
Bonner said the Meridian area is blessed to have excellent schools of nursing, but they, too, are affected by the nursing shortage.
"They're facing now a shortage of faculty because of the shortage in the hospitals," said Bonner."Most of the nurses that are working are working regular jobs and are not going back to school to get the upgraded education that's required to teach."
Because of this ongoing need, Rush Hospital is hosting a nursing fair Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Rush Hospital cafeteria on the third floor of the ambulatory building at 1314 19th Avenue. It's aimed at all nursing professionals, nursing students, and people considering the health care field.
"We just have a lot of opportunities to offer and we want to get the word out to them," Bonner said
