Louise "Do" BoninHead Coach
Nicholls State University women's basketball coach Louise "Do" Bonin returns to the bench for her eighth season after finding her Lady Colonels in the Southland Conference postseason tournament for the second time in her coaching career.
Under Bonin's direction, the Lady Colonels have made great strides in leveling the playing field with the other conference schools.
Bonin took over the reins of the NSU program in July of 1994 and had to hurriedly put together a team with virtually no recruiting.Despite a lack of size and 1-25 season, the Lady Colonels did finish fourth in the nation that season in three-point field goals at 7.5 per game.
In her second season, Bonin recruited her first class and created a nucleus of new players to compliment the returning Lady Colonels and help establish her concept of what the NSU women's basketball program should be.
During 1996-97, Bonin continued that concept and blended a team that featured just one senior, no juniors, six sophomores and four freshmen to the most victories at the school since the 1991-92 season. Not only did the did the Lady Colonels win their most games in several seasons, it was the first time in recent years that opponents did not take lightly a Lady Colonel team that played toe-to-toe with their opponent in virtually every contest.
Again, that is a credit to Bonin who is committed to building a winning program at Nicholls State.
It's a long road to building that type of program, but Bonin is doing things the right way.
Along with making strides in fielding a competitive team on the floor, new locker room facilities, a summer workout program that combines conditioning and weight training, have been added to establish Nicholls State into a top-notch Division I basketball program.
Prior to Nicholls State, Bonin spent a year as an assistant coach at Fordham University in Bronx, N.Y. Previous to her year on Rose Hill, Bonin was a successful coach in the Louisiana High School ranks.
At Fordham, Bonin was part of a coaching staff which led the Rams to the Patriot League regular season and conference tournament championships.
